MZ GE 250, from the early to mid eighties. I don't know why, but something about them appeals to me. I don't even know if they were any good. As far as I can work out not that many were made, and I don't think any ever made it to Australia.

I'm new here, I'll find the introductions bit and do a bit in there but for now.

The bikes in the photos are Top: GE250, 2nd GT250, 3rd GT???, bottom GE250

The GT bikes are the full on factory stuff ridden by the East German enduro stars (Jens Scheffler, Harald Sturm, Uwe Weber and others).  The bikes were designed and built to win enduro and they did a good job.  That bike is 1982/1983 I think.  They are twin shock, just mounted at the front of the swing arm.

The GE bikes are a replica GT chassis with a TS250 street bike engine - from what I know there aren't any common parts between the GT and GE engines and I've read that the GT was 20kg lighter than the GE.

The GT is unobtanium; a guy in Germany has several and the factory riders from back in the day get to ride them occasionally in Vinduro.  Although I'm pretty sure none is for sale I've heard the price of 30,000 Euros (38,000 AUD) mentioned several times.  No engine parts are available and the chassis parts will be pretty much used up too so it'd be a brave (rich) man who used one in anger.

The GE250 (Kleinserie) was built around 1988/89 and was made available for sale to the public (the GT was never sold).  By the time it arrived it was hopelessly out dated, heavy and slow (the TS250 street bike engine has maybe 20bhp).  You'd think that it'd be a real lemon then and they'd all be sold for scrap. I tried to buy one last year for 8,000 euro (10,000 AUD) and was out bidded.  One day I will get one, if I won the lottery I would have a GT too - perferably one of Scheffler's 500s and never mind the price.

What's the fascination I have with them?  The bikes were so just cool and surrounded in Iron Curtain secrecy.  My friend rode Harald Sturm's bike - and Sturm rode Derrick's Honda.  Derrick says the MZ was ok but it's a good job Sturm didn't ride Honda all the time!

Thanks for that ukaf, I really enjoyed learning more about these. I knew that there was a version with 2 shocks mounted at the front, but didn't realise what the difference actually meant. (I couldn't see the twin shocks in the second pic I posted).

I think that's why I like them so much, plus the fact that there wouldn't be many (if any) here in Australia. Based on what you've said, I'd really like a GT, but would be happy with a GE. Given the prices you've quoted, I would say it's extremely unlikely I'll own or ride either!

I've always had a soft spot for the ETZ road bikes too...

The Alpina were a good bike tex my mate and i bought
     Yamaha DT1's new .
He could not ride his for Sh## on rocky hills at all 1st gear
too high on that model (  Plus back then trails were not
Graded smooth like today you had Fallen trees every where
and Rocks and more Rocks on Hills )
Any How he bought a 250 Alpina and there was not many

I wish i had a pic of it, I remember seeing a Maico 790 motocross bike in a dirtbike magazine back in the late 70's too early 80's. It was a monster. Thought it'd be so fun to attempt too ride it.

A poxy old IT 400??? Evil handling, monster engine .. hello a similar year husky eats them. Stable smooth and they come with an inbuilt gyro. The most memorable thing about an IT is they way they turf you over the bars if you hit 3 whoopdies in a row...guaranteed..i dont like them. The coin would go to a 82 125 husky with the 175 kit. Ideal.

Les, Les, Les. How did I know you were going to post a pic of a TE510. Back when Husky made real bikes. A gorgeous looking bike with performance to match. I remember the stories you told me about the one your brother owned, Awesome, love the twin pipes too. Yep deep pockets for that one.

Here's a pic of Sean's 510TX in 1986:

And amazingly the same bike last weekend at CD9:

Cheers!!

OK, since money is no option, I'll take three  :-*

For show, if I can find one, any of my good mate Steve's old pre-MX converted off roaders:

or one of his old Huskys, preferably autographed by his son:

Then for go:

Then for when the go bike is broken and waiting for parts:

or

I propose a new rule for this thread. Whoever wins the lottery first has to buy us all our dream bikes  :D Especially if it's Les! :D
